Horse costume ideas for Halloween, and hats that stay on
Halloween and Christmas are peak season for horses in costume. Here are ideas that work, how to keep dressing up safe, and an option that needs no costume at all.
Easy costume ideas
- Unicorn: a soft horn on a headband over the headcollar, and ribbons in the mane.
- Zebra: stripes in washable, horse-safe paint or chalk, on a grey or white horse.
- Ghost: an old white sheet or rug over the back, never over the head, for in-hand photos only.
- Skeleton: a printed skeleton rug or sheet, a favourite at fun shows.
- Cowboy and horse: rider in the hat, horse in a bandana.
- Christmas: reindeer antlers, a red rug, tinsel on the browband.
Keep it safe
- Nothing over the eyes or ears that blocks sight or hearing.
- Nothing loose that can slip down around the legs.
- Introduce each piece slowly, in the stable, before the photo.
- Use paints and glitter sold for horses, and test a small patch first.
- Costumes are for supervised photos and fun shows. Take them off before turnout and never leave a horse alone in one.
Hats that stay on: 3D filters
Some horses will not wear a hat for anything. Neigh, the horse translator for iPhone, has face filters made for a horse’s head: a top hat, a unicorn horn, horns, cat ears, heart shades, round glasses, cool shades and a jazz tie. Each one is a 3D prop that follows your horse’s head as it turns and nods.
There are flat looks too, including a cowboy hat, a bobble hat, a flower band and a bandana, plus colour grades and weather to finish the shot. Horns and cat ears make an easy Halloween look, and the bobble hat does the job for Christmas.
Dress up the paddock too
Every horse you add to Neigh gets a pixel version of itself in your own paddock. You can dress them all up with hats, rugs and tack, and swap a friend code so your friends’ horses join yours.
Questions
What can I dress my horse up as for Halloween?
Easy ideas include a unicorn, a zebra, a ghost, a skeleton rug, or a matching cowboy and horse. Keep anything clear of the eyes, ears and legs.
Is it safe to put a costume on a horse?
It can be, for supervised photos. Introduce each piece slowly, keep everything clear of the eyes, ears and legs, use horse-safe paint, and take the costume off before turnout.
Is there a filter that puts a hat on a horse?
Yes. Neigh has 3D face filters made for horses, including a top hat, a unicorn horn, horns and cat ears, that follow your horse’s head as it moves.
