How to record your horse’s sounds on your phone
A good recording makes a good translation. These tips work for any phone video of a horse and help Neigh catch every call.
Get close and quiet
Stand within a few metres of your horse. Turn off the radio, step away from fans and clippers, and wait for the yard to settle. A nicker is soft and is easy to lose from across a barn.
Beat the wind
Wind across the microphone is the most common reason a take cannot be used. Stand with your back to the wind, or film from inside the stable door. If Neigh says a take was too windy, you are not charged for it.
Pick your moment
Horses call at predictable times: at feeding time, when a herd mate is led away or comes back, and when you walk up to the field. Have the camera ready before those moments.
Use Live mode
In Live mode the camera keeps rolling and translations pop up seconds after your horse calls, so you do not have to guess when to press record.
Already have a clip?
Neigh also works with clips from your camera roll and with sound-only takes, so the video you filmed last week can be translated too.
Questions
How do I get my horse to whinny for a video?
Film when a herd mate is being led away or brought back, or at feeding time. Those are the moments horses call most.
Can I translate a horse video I already filmed?
Yes. Neigh can translate clips from your camera roll as well as new recordings.
