Do animal translator apps work? Dog, cat and horse translators explained

Search the App Store for a pet translator and you will find hundreds of them. They work in very different ways, and a quick test tells you which kind you have.

The short answer

No app turns an animal’s calls into the exact words it would use if it could talk. Scientists have not done that for any species yet. Translator apps on your phone are made for fun, and the good ones say so plainly.

That does not make them all the same. Some never listen to your animal at all. Others react to what is actually in your recording.

The three kinds of translator app

A quick test

Where the science is in 2026

Researchers are using machine learning on animal sound. The Earth Species Project has built an audio model, NatureLM-audio, that can tell many species and call types apart. Project CETI records sperm whales to study their clicks. In 2025 a team studying dolphin whistles won the first award of the Coller-Dolittle Prize, which was set up to reward progress towards two-way communication with animals.

This is real progress at sorting and naming calls. It is not a word-for-word translator you can download, and very little of it so far is about horses.

Where Neigh fits

Neigh is a horse translator for iPhone, made for fun. It finds the horse sounds in your video, translates each call into a line in your horse’s own personality, and writes that line onto the footage as a subtitle.

It is in the third group above. If a take is too quiet, too short or too windy, Neigh says so instead of making something up, and you are never charged for it. Its translations are playful, not a word-for-word account of what your horse thinks, and they are not veterinary or behavioural advice.

Questions

Is there a real animal translator?

Not one that turns calls into the exact words an animal would use. Researchers can now sort many calls by species and call type with machine learning, but every translator app you can download is made for fun.

Do dog translator apps work?

They entertain. Many play stock sounds or show lines that do not depend on your recording. Check the store listing for words like “for entertainment” or “fictional”, and try recording silence to see what comes back.

Is there a horse translator app?

Yes. Neigh is a horse translator app for iPhone, made for fun. It turns the whinnies, nickers and snorts in your video into a line of words on the clip, and says so when a take cannot be translated.

Can AI understand animals?

AI models can already tell many animal calls apart by species and call type. Understanding what a call is about, the way a person understands a sentence, is still an open research question.
